5 Common Licensing Myths that Hinder the Adoption of Creative Cloud

In part 1 of this 2 part series where we shed light on common myths associated with Adobe’s Creative Cloud, we analysed a few concerns that hindered the adoption of CC.

Part 1 focused primarily around the functionalities of CC; in part 2 , we would like to analyze and throw some light on some of the myths and concerns regarding licensing and pricing.


“The subscription model sounds like it might be more expensive than perpetual licensing, so it may not be worth it to me.”

Creative Cloud complete is comprised of various individual products. If we sum up the prices of the individual products under the historical perpetual model, the total value was just over $10,000. If we also consider that Adobe offered a bundle suite of products known as Creative Master Suites, the price was still around, $2600 and that was without any upgrades.

However, with Creative Suite, you get all the products in Master Suite and more, all with the latest updates and upgrades as and when they are released, and professional training. These products are priced at $49/month/user and can be used on two computers (both Mac & PC) and in any of the 27 languages.

“Wait your saying that Creative Cloud offers everything that Master Collection did plus at a lower cost? That has to be too good to be true right?”

Since CC’s release nearly 2 years ago, Adobe has been steadily carving an undisputed space for itself in the market of digital creativity while holding on to its original promise – to provide the world’s best creative tools without bound¬aries. One of the biggest benefits of Creative Cloud is that you no longer need to wait for new features or functionality to be released every 2 years and instead can see new functionality come out on a monthly basis. The best part is you are really looking at a lower cost when staying current with upgrades.

If you were to purchase Creative Cloud you would be looking at a total expenditure over 4 years of $2400 to $2880 while if you were to purchase Master Collection CS6 and then stay up to date with new features and functionality the total expenditure over 4 years would be $4697 after factoring in the upgrade cost every 2 years. If you would have kept Master Collection current with purchasing upgrades vs Creative Cloud for Teams you would have been looking at a 27 year breakeven before the subscription gets more expensive based on current pricing.

“Well, then Adobe is going to entice everyone to the Cloud – and once we are all hooked, they are going to jack up the prices.”

Raising Creative Cloud prices to unaffordable rates would be counterproductive for Adobe. Over the time span of two years, they have repeatedly come up with promotional pricing where CC was sold at $49.99 instead of $69.99 for customers having CS3 or higher and now it has been turned into a full time price.

“The Creative Cloud isn’t free, so if I leave then I will lose all my files.”

Your Creative Cloud files are stored on your desktop as well as on the Creative Cloud servers. If you cancel or downgrade your paid membership, you will still have access to all of the files in the Creative Cloud folder on your computer and via the Creative Cloud website.

Your account will be downgraded to a free membership, which includes 2GB of storage. If you’re using more than 2GB of storage, you will not be able to upload any new files to the cloud until the amount of online space used in your account drops below your allotted amount.

If you are over your storage limit, you have 90 days to reduce your online usage or you may lose access to some or all of your files saved on the Creative Cloud servers.

“Even if I only use one or two applications, I have no choice but to buy the complete Creative Cloud membership, right?”

If you only want to use an individual tool or two, then you can sign up for a Single-App Membership at a lower per month price ($9-19). The Single-App plan enables users to choose one CC desktop app and provides select services for a lower price.

For example, Adobe is now offering a special Photography Plan worldwide that gives both Photoshop CC + Lightroom 5 (the full desktop releases) and more for $9.99 a month.
