Changes to Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2015 Product Line

Microsoft made some pivotal changes to its Visual Studio 2015 product line offering by simplifying their Developer Offerings Portfolio while making their most advanced development tool more affordable for their customers. Also, MSDN Operating Systems will be discontinued as of September 1, 2015 and no longer offered for sale.



Visual Studio 2015 Product Offerings

Microsoft has retired its Visual Studio Premium with MSDN and Visual Studio Ultimate with MSDN offerings and will be automatically transitioning existing subscribers to its top of the chart offering: Visual Studio Enterprise with MSDN.

  • Visual Studio Community
  • Visual Studio Professional with MSDN
  • Visual Studio Enterprise with MSDN (new)

Visual Studio Community is free for open source projects, academic research, training, education and small professional teams. Visual Studio Ultimate and Visual Studio Premium merged to provide a new edition: Visual Studio Enterprise with MSDN. MSDN Operating Systems will be discontinued as of September 1, 2015 and no longer offered for sale. Apart from these changes all other editions remain same.

Visual Studio 2015 Migration Path

When Visual Studio 2015 is released later this year, all active Visual Studio with MSDN subscribers will be upgraded to the new editions as described in the following table.

**Microsoft Store online pricing for Visual Studio Enterprise with MSDN: $5,999 (new) and $2,569 (renewal). Prior Visual Studio Ultimate with MSDN pricing: $13,299 (new) and $4,249 (renewal). Additional discounts may also be available through Microsoft Volume Licensing resellers.

As already mentioned, active Visual Studio Premium with MSDN and Visual Studio Ultimate with MSDN will be automatically upgraded to Visual Studio Enterprise 2015 with MSDN. As MSDN operating system will be discontinued there will be no migration for same. At expiration of their subscription term, MSDN Operating Systems subscribers are eligible to renew to Visual Studio Professional with MSDN.
