VMware’s Suite of Health Management Tools
VMware offers several easy-to-use tools that provide straightforward data on the health of the datacenter:
vSphere Operations Manager (vSOM) is perfect for organizations with 50 or more virtual machines operating on the vSphere server suite. Simply put, vSphere consists of several VMware technologies that provide live migration, disaster recovery protection, power management, and automatic resource balancing for data centers.
vCenter Operations Management (vCOps) is a much broader solution available for organizations with more virtual workloads beyond vSphere. Public cloud, physical infrastructures, and customers with regulatory compliance needs all benefit from the vCOps solution.
Proof of Concept – vSphere Optimization Assessment
The vSphere Optimization Assessment (vOA) is a no-charge, 30 day trial of the Operations Management tool. After completing a 30 minute installation of the software, SoftwareONE Technical Specialists gather key data points of your datacenter’s daily operations over the course of 2-3 weeks. The final week consists of the Technical Specialist defining and presenting a report which fully outlines your datacenter’s health, which can be drilled down into 3 specific categories:
- Health is measured as a weighted combination of Workloads against Anomalies and Faults, i.e. whether the machine is behaving normally. Health identifies current problems in the system as well as issues thatmust be resolved immediately to avoid problems. As you can see in the below image, these 3 areas can be drilled down even further to provide a deeper analysis of each item:
- Risk is measured as a projection of the Time Remaining until the virtual machine’s memory capacity is maxed. Furthermore, whereas Health identifies current problems, Risk identifies potential problems that would eventually hurt performance. The Operations Management tool analyzes your VM utilization over the course of the 3 week assessment to provide a trend-based blueprint, as represented in the image below:
- Efficiency identifies opportunities to optimize datacenter utilization based on the Health and Risk assessments. The Efficiency metric validates the value of the Operations Management tool because it presents cost-savings opportunities for IT Administrators to consider. For instance, the left-hand graph of the below image shows that 92% of VM machines are over-provisioned, meaning that there’s a 92% waste of resources.
These images are only a sample of the analytics uncovered throughout the vSphere Optimization Assessment. As indicated above, at the end of the Assessment, a SoftwareONE Technical Specialist will compile a comprehensive report that identifies best-practice recommendations based on the information gathered throughout the vOA process.
