In March of 2016, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that his auto company would do the unthinkable. He promised a $35,000 electric car that drove like its six-figure predecessors and was one of the safest cars in the world. The car would be called “Model 3” and Musk said, “You will not be able to buy a better car, even with no options.” After more than 500,000 advance reservations for the Model 3, many analysts called the launch crazy, unprofitable, technically impossible and overly ambitious for that price point. Fast-forward to July 29, 2017 and the first 30 production vehicles were handed out to some very lucky Tesla employees. The challenge now for Tesla is ramping up production and meeting the incredible demand. Tesla hopes to build 500,000 Model 3s in 2018. Musk said, “We finally have a great affordable electric car that is absolutely what is needed.”

In order to bring to market such a unique value proposition for customers, Tesla needed to do three things:

  1. Produce its batteries at a low enough cost
  2. Build and deploy a production line capable of meeting demand
  3. Deliver a vehicle that upheld its reputation for quality, safety and innovation

While the jury is still out on the overall success of this launch, we do know that Tesla achieved its pricing commitment of $35,000 (base model), with a minimum range of 220 miles and a 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) time of 5.6 seconds. Many of the innovative touches still exist with the lower priced Model 3 including the raised 15-inch touchscreen display, including a navigation map, and it even uses your phone as the car key.

So how does Tesla relate to SoftwareONE? With our new launch of SAMSimple we are doing for Software Asset Management (SAM) what Tesla has done for electric cars – bring it to the masses. Nearly 9 out of 10 companies are struggling with SAM, often ignorant of its possibilities and complexities. They view SAM as a “nice-to-have” someday. Many executives often do not connect SAM to IT security, help desk or other major IT processes that need software data to work efficiently. Others simply don’t want to spend the money or deal with another systems integration hassle.

Enter SAMSimple, an end-to-end Software Asset Management (SAM) managed service that enables organizations to more quickly realize the full value of their investment, mitigate compliance risk and reduce the cost of their entire software portfolio. SAMSimple offers customers an industry leading asset discovery, normalization and license management engine all within your budget. Imagine all of your software, desktop and datacenters, properly accounted for including usage, location and status. Now imagine a team of software licensing experts who work alongside a local team to continuously develop compliance positions and cost optimization recommendations for top publishers like Microsoft, Adobe, VMware and many others. The only thing a customer has to think about is which three software vendors to include. SoftwareONE takes care of the rest, from implementation to the detailed software compliance analyses that will enable customers to avoid audit penalties, re-harvest software and make more efficient buying decisions.

There are no more excuses for not doing SAM! Just like Tesla, SoftwareONE is challenging the market to keep pace. We’re out front in bringing innovation to an area where over 30% of all software is reportedly wasted. Our approach is to engineer a new solution that brings together people, processes and technology in a delivery model that is standardized, predictable and efficient. In Tesla terms, we’ve designed to a new level of affordability that is incomparable to other SAM solutions in the market.
